Alec Issigonis turned the engine sideways and put the gearbox in the sump to free up 80% of the floor area for passengers. John Cooper, a Formula 1 constructor, turned it into a racing car. The Mini won the Monte-Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967, and lost the 1966 event over a question of headlights.
