The gullwing doors were not a styling choice. The tubular frame rose so high along the flanks that no conventional door was possible.
The first production car fitted with direct petrol injection, the 300 SL of 1954 took a machine designed for racing onto the road, and created along the way one of the most recognisable profiles of the century.
